The big news

And this is the big news: we’ve moved (my puppets and I). New year, new shop. And new blog! Pelpa started as an experiment, an attempt to make objects from recycled paper. Any kind of object.

Once I made a finger puppet and I liked it. Then I made another one. And I felt captivated by the possibility of playing with diversity and the many ways a person/puppet can be.

The emphasis went from the paper itself as a material, to the range of expressions, personalities, gazes. I started to try different materials and added clay, fabric and more.

And because names have always meant a lot to me (names of everything: streets where I lived, guys I liked, schools I attended…) here we are, with a shop that better represents the fate of things.

Over this time Pelpa has taught me a few lessons:

-Being constant has its rewards. To someone as volatile as me when it comes to ideas and projects, this one has been the best learning process.

-You don’t have to be perfect in art. It is more important to have something to say. Actually it is in imperfection that people can see a trace of me, that is where I am, and that’s wonderful.

-The world is big, there is room for everyone! I used to wonder how I could dare to make “art”, with so many virtuoso artists all over the Earth. Now I wonder how I could forget that the important thing is enjoying what you do.

-Learning has no age. It is not a matter of age, but patience, dedication and humility. And it lasts your whole life.

Hope to see you in my new blog/shop/flickr…

Last update of this year

Here it is: the last shop update of this year!

2010 will bring with it big news… See you then!

Hope you have a maravellous holiday.

Clementina

She’s far too shy to introduce herself. She lives in the woodland surrounded by her fellow animals, but she runs away from humans (and most times, she’s right to!). Clementina lives inside an old oak tree. She’s got her little kitchen with her little teapot, her little sofa with her little slippers and her little bed with her little lavender pillow. She’s ready to face the winter!

Laura

She’s only 10, but she’s asked to behave "like a lady”. She is expected to learn piano, speak French and attend charity events. Thankfully, she’s got enough personality to do as she pleases.

Maia

Sé dos cosas acerca de ella: 1. Tiene una cara redondita divina

2. Probablemente quieras apretarle los cachetes!

I know two things about her: 1. She’s got such a lovely round face

2. You will probably want to squeeze her cheeks!

Stella

Another woman from another time… When I look at her I can’t help imagining her looking from the window of a Victorian house, knitting and downing litres of Earl Grey in delicate teacups.

Cozy time

This will be my first Christmas away from my family, city, country…Well, I think it happened once before, because I needed to “rebel”, and I remember that at midnight (in Argentina, it is customary to wait until midnight to celebrate) I regretted it so much!!! The thing is that I'm going to do all I can to have a cozy Christmas in my new home, that in keeping with tradition in this house must include a panettone on the piano.

That’s why, and because we are in the middle of a house refurbishment, builders, carpenters and ourself sometimes acting as painters…next Monday will be the last 2009 shop update at my Etsy shop. Today I’ve been visited by some new characters, among them:

Miss Fox

Sophisticated looks and all, Miss fox wakes up every morning and goes shopping at the local farmer’s market. Then she goes back home and prepares delicious quail eggs with butternut squash and that kind of thing. Winter is her favourite season.

Weird bird

The weirdest things about him (and there are lots of them…!) is that you can’t know whether he’s wearing a mask. And you will never know.

Alexa

She is an extraordinary girl. Some people even say she’s got special powers. I don’t really know what they are talking about, but I like to think she’s not from this world.

Birthday boy

He never misses a birthday party. It doesn’t matter whose birthday, he’s always there. He doesn’t sing happy birthday, he doesn’t smile, he doesn’t bring presents, he is just there.

The guardian of the forest

This is the first thing/person/being I make (I can’t decide what to call it yet) that I’m truly in love with. I’m not talking about perfection (it’s been a long time since I decided, as a daily effort, not to even go that way) I’m talking about what each object provokes in me. And she brings back that calm sensation I experience within myself when I'm immersed in Nature, something that happens more often in Argentina than in London (sadly, because I spend more time in the latter) She’s got already a new home and I’ll miss her so much!

The gift of the Autumn

Last Saturday was a gift from the Autumn. It was magical to have such a blue sky so close to winter. People's faces recovered some brightness, everyone seemed to enjoy the crunchiness af the leaves beneath their feet.

I would have loved to spend the whole day in the park (even tough the day lasts till 4 pm), but I came back home to finish these girls, among others:

Lady with a bird

Simple: she is a lady with a bird. What could be more commonplace than that? I always see ladies with birds on their heads in my neighbourhood. What? This doesn’t happen everywhere?

 Susu

I totally love the film Les Triplettes de Belleville. And I made Susu thinking of that glorious trio of singers from the ‘20.

Lucía

Ella es definitivamente una chica malcriada. Pero quién puede no malcriarla? Si tiene unos cachetes divinos!

She is definitely a spoiled little girl. But who can help but spoil her? She’s got such adorable cheeks!

Winter time

Vamos a conocerlos:

I’m back from a double of flu + gastro-something virus. Recovered and full of energy to face the London winter (my first one since I moved from Argentina). I don’t know how it feels to say goodbye to the sunlight at 4pm yet, but I guess it will be a good time to hibernate and create.

From my illness days I came out with a (pretty eclectic!) bunch of new puppets (some of them adopted the same day I listed them on Etsy!), as follows: a Chinese-style girl, a mafia “worker”, a wood-dweller and a book character. Let’s meet them:

Lili

Lili is an adorable girl who loves to wear Chinese dresses and to draw birds. Two little details that can tell you a lot about a person (or a puppet).

Albertino

You might have imagined this already, but I have to tell you: Albertino is from the mafia. He is used to doing “little jobs”. The other puppets tremble when he comes into a puppet-restaurant or a puppet-office. I would like to say that, deep down, he is a good man. But I wouldn’t swear by it.

Wood-dweller

She is one of the many beings that live in the wood. She’s got elegant, long hairy ears that she uses to listen to the wind, the birds and Bjork’s songs.

Margherita (Dolcevita)

I was inspired by the wonderful Italian writer Stefanno Benni and his book Margherita Dolcevita. She is the most adorable, funny, sensitive dreamer girl you can imagine.

Rosalinda

I gave the sewing machine I bought in Argentina a go and set about making this little dress for  Rosalinda, the most romantic finger-puppet ever...

The autumn passenger

This is the autumn passenger, the one who spends hours sitting in the station with her suitcase full of leaves and a little poetry:

 she waits

for the train

that will take

her

to the place

where

Abelardo the sailor

Everybody knows that bunnies are great sailors. They love the sea. And Abelardo is a perfect example: he has proven skills in the art of navigation.

Halloween kids

Fearsome duo

Josefina
Ella es una chica Halloween...

She is a Halloween girl...

Lautaro

Lautaro will be the name of my new nephew (due in a few days!). It is also the name of this little boy in an indecipherable costume. Despite what his face suggests, he enjoys Halloween quite a lot.

Thursday 1 October 2009

Clara

This is Clara, an intriguing woman who loves tea, big lakes and spending the afternoons reading philosophy (Merleau-Ponty is her favorite). She is a finger puppet, but she feels really comfortable resting on a full bookshelf.

Thursday 27 August 2009

Malena

She lives by night and sleeps by day. She walks through Buenos Aires looking for a “tanguero” to invite her to dance and make her forget about it all. And she dances with all but doesn’t stay with anyone.

They all fall in love when she sings for them with her melancholic nicotine voice.

Tuesday 25 August 2009

Annaïs is a Parisian girl, bohemian, sophisticated, sometimes distant, always adorable.

Officially, she is a finger puppet but you can leave her to rest on a shelf as a décor object (please, don’t say “object” in front of her).

Olivier

This is Olivier. He is a musketeer, but just any musketeer: he is a posh one, who only wears designer clothes and expensive perfumes.

Jane

I made Jane after Jane Franklin, sister of Benjamin. I found out about her by reading the text “If he had been born a woman” (Si él hubiera nacido mujer) by the Uruguayan writer and journalist Eduardo Galeano. As Galeano says: “her case will awaken no interest in historians”.
